Developing and Maintaining a Trusted and Secure Enterprise

There is no doubt that enterprise security, which includes infrastructure, cloud resources, applications and data, remote systems, and IoT and edge devices, is a top concern for every IT organization today. In fact, the need for security improvements and investments is the primary reason IT budgets increased this year, noted 57% of the IT executives and line-of-business managers who took part in IDG’s 2022 State of the CIO Survey. Roughly 75% of the executives polled also admitted their responsibilities and involvement in cybersecurity, data privacy, and compliance activities were expected to increase this year.

The challenge, however, is that security and maintaining a secure enterprise is no longer an isolated issue but involves a variety of related areas and concerns that are all critical in creating a safe and trusted enterprise environment. While technical and physical security safeguards are important and a necessary foundation, companies today must also consider how to minimize the collateral damage of a security breach, including the external impact on an organization’s reputation and loss of customers and partners. There are also regulatory and compliance costs and penalties to consider, as well as the devastating effect an incident may have on a company’s perceived trustworthiness.

This session took a holistic look at security, taking into consideration everything from regulatory compliance and privacy to ethics, transparency, and diversity and inclusion. We were joined by Sarah Betadam, D.Eng., Chief Information Officer, Novanta Inc. and Nelson Sims, Senior Advisor, Information Security, District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority.
